Beyond Physical Intimacy



Will the next generation have sex with robots? This question is sure to instantly trigger a brow arch among the retro generation, who would quickly predict the end of the world in such an eventuality.

So what is in store for us as far as the future of sex is concerned? Therapists, psychologists, and social-trend watchers are keeping a keen eye on the way the mechanism of sex is evolving. Technology, as in almost every other field, is definitely going to redefine the world of sex.

Technology is set to take over sex. Sensors, robots, artificial intelligence and cognitive computing are a few of the technological advancements which will ensure the transition of science-fiction to reality.


Sex toys have already been around and vibrators and dildos are now commonplace. However, if we take a closer look at the way things are evolving a lot more things are on the verge of unfolding. Let us examine the limitless possibilities in surreal sex:

1.     Virtual Sex: Sex will come alive with Virtual Reality. 3D porn with 360° immersive experience aided by haptic sex toys will provide the audience with the feel of actually being there.


2.     Freedom from touch: Yes you have read it right, in the future the need to touch for enhancing intimacy will not be required. Technology will take care of this need. Sexual partners need not be in close proximity. In fact, they could be in different rooms across the world.

3.     Sex Robots will rule: Life like sex robots will replace blood and flesh partners. These robots will be remarkably realistic and can be customized right down to the hair, nails, eye color etc. They will be further enhanced with the help of artificial intelligence to create the most perfect sex buddy.


4.     Special sensuality enhancing devices will appear: So far devices designed for women have dominated the market for sex toys. However in the time to come men can lay their hands on devices, which will simulate the pleasurable experience of masturbating and much more.


5.     Garments will be technology controlled: No more fumbling with the bra hook or the trouser belt. Technology will ensure that bras and pants fall off with the proverbial wave of a wand. A clap or a similar gesture will see the garments fly off.

Now let us look at some predictions and statistical highlights to find out where we exactly stand.

1.     In this very year, i.e. 2017, Sex-bot manufacturer RealDoll, is set to launch a realistic love-dolls. Its founder, Matt McMullen has indicated as much and has claimed that his company is set to create a doll, which will emotionally bond with a man through the use of artificial intelligence.


2.     By the year 2024, it is expected that with the help of virtual reality, people can transform them into anyone else in their fantasy. They will also be able to play out such fantasies in the virtual world.         

3.     Long-distance sex will become a reality in 2025 when it will be possible to create 3D-printed body parts of lovers, which will be enabled with haptic technology so as to provide intense sexual experience over long distances.

4.     By 2028 it is likely that at least one-fourth of the world’s young population will have experienced long-distance sexual experience.

5.     Adult performers will have the privilege of selling robotic replicas of themselves to customers for the purpose of sex by the year 2033.


Well, aren’t the possibilities endless? They certainly are and it will be interesting to see how things unfold. The social fallout of such sweeping changes to the idea of sex and intimacy will also be an interesting subject for study.

The first time I came across the subject of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), was when I heard Khadija Gbla, a lady from Sierra Leone, deliver a very hard-hitting talk on Ted Talk show.
